AMBERMART - 18th International Amber Fair
It is for the 18th time that all eyes will be on Baltic amber at AMBERMART, with the latest collections of jewellery and functional art, competitions, exhibitions, seminars, workshops, an amber information course— these are just some of the reasons to visit AMBEREXPO from 31 August to 2 September.
Why is it good to be here?
The most important and most eye-catching reason to visit AMBERMART is the opportunity to see the latest products from more than 215 exhibitors. “This year, there will be somewhat more exhibitors from abroad, mainly owing to the significant presence of Lithuanian manufacturers of amber jewellery. We expect exhibitors from 9 countries,” says Ewa Rachoń, AMBERMART Director. AMBERMART is mainly a place to present brand new amber collections for the fall/winter season. Both the buyers and the exhibitors appreciate the event’s convenient dates: after the summer holidays but still before the world’s most important fall trade events—ideal to place orders for the pre-Christmas season. “Meetings with customers—before haste takes over in the coming months—are also a good opportunity to wrap up the summer season: information coming to us directly from the market helps us to prepare a spring collection that will match the customers’ preferences even better,” explains Marzena Leś, S&A Export Director.
To know more
AMBERMART has an attractive agenda of side events, structured in a way that makes it interesting both to jewellery industry professionals and the non-trade public. With the former in mind, an open seminar on Brand Building in Social Media will be run by Maria Olszewska of Oliwska Grupa Consultingowa (Oliwa Consulting Group). Industry insiders will be able to improve their professional knowledge by participating in the Understanding Amber Training Course and a workshop on Gemological tests on amber, selected natural resins and their imitations, organised by the International Amber Association.
To be a jeweller
Non-trade amber fans will have a rare opportunity to learn about goldsmith tools and techniques and even to make jewellery themselves on a genuine goldsmith workbench under the watchful eye of master goldsmiths: Andrzej Kupniewski and Marcin Tymiński of the STFZ Goldsmithing Artists’ Association. “The Goldsmith Craft Workshop with the Masters will demonstrate what the work of a professional jeweller looks like. Attendees will be able to design and make jewellery themselves from the provided material. This year, it will be an amber pendant,” encourages Andrzej Kupniewski
To get noticed
You can see for yourself how immensely skilled and creative AMBERMART exhibitors are by viewing the award-winning pieces in the Most Beautiful Amber Jewellery Competition. For the 3rd time, the members of the international judging panel will personally select the best pieces on offer for evaluation. “In the competition’s previous format, we heard many times that truly valuable items went unnoticed by not being entered for various reasons. Therefore, we have decided to take a risk and reverse the format. After two editions, it turned out that we have many modest yet very skilled jewellers and goldsmiths who perhaps would not decide to enter their products and compete for a prize on their own,” says Ewa Rachoń.
Amber Museum in the Great Mill?
Exhibitions have always been a strong feature of AMBERMART. This time, you can enjoy An Exhibition of Fossil Resin Reference Samples and their Imitations from Gabriela Gierłowska’s Collection (stand B.502), the Tears of the Forest and the Sun – The Amber Planet JANTAR exhibition of photography and jewellery by Barbara Gronuś-Dutko (stand A.131), the Mandalas exhibition of photography by Marta Flisykowska (stand A.520) and, last but not least, the perhaps most eagerly anticipated exhibition which presents the design for the new Amber Museum at the Great Mill (stand A.100). Today, the Gdańsk Amber Museum is located in Katownia (Medieval Torture Tower). Its interior is beautiful but, unfortunately, already too cramped. This is the reason for the idea to relocate the museum to the historical Grand Mill situated in the heart of Gdańsk, where a state-of-the-art and spacious exhibit could be housed. The exhibition presents not only designs but also the history of this remarkable location from the time it was built until now, along with the Amber Museum’s achievements to date. Excitement and experiences of the highest order, jewellery- and design-wise, will also be provided by the mid-view of Baltic Amber. Tradition and Innovation; join us for a tour of this exhibition at the European Solidarity Centre on the evening of AMBERMART Day 2. Curated by Prof. Sławomir Fijałkowski of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and by Robert Pytlos, the Mayor of Gdańsk’s Amber Coordinator, the exhibition records all the significant achievements in contemporary amber manufacture: art, craft and design, combining this aspect with high quality of workmanship.
Farewell with Mariacka Sets Sail
AMBERMART will culminate, as always, in the Mariacka Street Festival, this year under the motto Mariacka Sets Sail. For the 8th time, this perhaps most beautiful street of Gdańsk will host a meeting of amber and art in its natural setting, as part of the swinging programme co-developed by the International Amber Association, local gallery owners, artists, restaurateurs, partner institutions and organisations, and the residents themselves.
