Design “The Heart of Gdańsk”

Have you ever wondered where the heart of Gdańsk is? Is it in the Old Town or the Main City? It turns out that the heart, i.e. the very centre of Gdańsk, is located in its historic part, more precisely at Świętego Ducha Street, by the tenement house no. 81.

The tradition of designating such spots dates back to antiquity and is characteristic of many European cities, such as Paris and London.

According to calculations and tradition, the centre of Gdańsk is located at Świętego Ducha Street. This fact was once emphasized by a slab of stone with a diameter of about 70 cm, built into the pavement near the Royal Chapel. Unfortunately, while the road was being repaired, the spot was completely destroyed (covered with asphalt) and although currently there is no plaque, there is a great chance that soon the "Heart of Gdańsk" will be marked again. This is due to a competition announced by the City of Gdańsk and the Gdańsk Foundation.

The originator of the project is Andrzej Januszajtis, an outstanding expert in our city. Everyone can take part in the contest. The project assumes the recreation of the plaque. It must be at least 70 cm in diameter and have an inscription reading ”The Historic Centre of Gdańsk”. The preferred, but not required, material is granite.

Ideas should be sent by 30 March 2018 to the address of the Gdańsk Foundation (Długi Targ 28/29, 80-803 Gdańsk). You can also submit your work to the Foundation in person.

Entries should be marked with a note: "Stone Heart of the City” Contest and delivered by 30.03.2018, 3:00 pm.

The results will be announced on April 5th, and the author of the winning entry will be awarded with a prize of 3,000 PLN!

The competition is organized by the Gdańsk Foundation and Our Gdańsk Association. The partners of the competition are the Municipality of Gdańsk, Gdańsk Tourism Organisation, the Road Administration in Gdańsk and Gdańsk City Council.
