10 installations for the 10th anniversary of the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre
On 24 February 2018 the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre marks its 10th anniversary and invites all its viewers and friends from near and far to join in the celebration. The event combining architecture and installation art in public space will take place in a theatre in Gdańsk for the first time. The Academy of Fine Arts students led by Professor Robert Florczak worked on interactive multimedia installations referring to Shakespeare’s works. The artworks will surround the theatre building.
The new artistic institution – the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre – was establised on 20 February 2008. The international architectural competition for the theatre building was announced four years earlier, and the construction started in 2009. The theatre’s activities started in full swing after the official opening in September 2014. Gdańsk has not only gained a new theatre, but also a cultural centre with an international reach. It presents the most interesting artistic events from all over the world, implements numerous educational projects, as well as enriches Pomerania’s theatre programme with new critically acclaimed and well-received productions shown on, among others, the only Elizabethan stage in Poland. The theatre building is one of the most modern theatre facilities in the world and a partial reconstruction of the 17th century Gdańsk theatre, which attracts tourists from the farthest corners of the globe.
We welcome you to join us on the unusual walk “in the footsteps of Shakespeare”, leading through 10 installations located in various places around the theatre building. We also invite you to visit a small retrospective exhibition of theatrical posters, archival photographs, costumes and props from the last 10 years of the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre activity.
The installation will be open to the public on 24-25 February 2018 at 17:00-22:00.
