January is a „fair” month

January traditionally begins a new period of international touristic fairs. It usually lasts till beginning of April. Although it’s just a beginning of February Visit Gdansk has already taken part in 2 major events: MATKA (Helsinki) and FITUR (Madrid).

The first fair where Visit Gdansk partook was MATKA Fair in Helsinki (Fin. “Journey”). The event lasted 4 days: from 16th till 19th of January. Visit Gdansk was a part of the national stand, which we shared with cities like Krakow and Sopot.

During the whole event about 600 people visited our stand. It turned into a real “siege” on Saturday, and we really enjoyed it. It turns out that Gdansk is becoming more and more recognizable in Finland and tourists had a lot of questions. What’s interesting, about half of them already booked a stay in Gdansk. They are mostly interested in rich history, beautiful architecture and great cuisine. The journey is made easy by direct flights to Gdansk: from Turku and from Helsinki. It also turned out that travelers from Finland value our weather… which is much better than the one they experience in their country.

New week, new event. This time in Southern Europe, in Madrid to be precise. FITUR fair lasted 5 days: from 22nd till 26th of January. First 3 days were devoted to business meetings, while 2 remaining were open for everyone. Just like in Helsinki, our stand was a part of national stall shared with Krakow and Warsaw. In general almost 900 people payed us a visit. People from Spain showed interest in Gdansk a bit differently than Fins. Many of them were looking to find a new destination to visit. Most of them were young people – students who were interested in Gdansk’s architecture and places to let your hair down after whole day of sightseeing.

What’s worth mentioning, Polish Ambassador in Spain, Ms. Marzenna Adamczyk payed us a visit too! That was a perfect chance to have a talk about the Prize of the Countess of Asturia, which was awarded to Gdansk in year 2019.

Another fair is coming soon. Beginning of March, we will promote our city at ITB Berlin Fair.
