May Day picnic!

Late April has traditionally been the time to prepare for the great May Day picnic. This year, the word “great” is in no way an exaggeration. After all, it is not always that the two days – 1st and 3rd May, are a Wednesday and a Friday. In addition, Easter is less than a week away from May Day. Here are a few things you can do during that time.

Those who take 7 days off actually get an uninterrupted 16 days of leisure time. In Poland, 1st May is traditionally celebrated as International Labour Day, which is in line with most other countries. May 2nd was named the “Day of the Flag of the Republic of Poland” several years ago to connect 1st May with 3rd May, though it is a regular working day. 3rd May is a strictly Polish holiday – the 3rd May Constitution Day, which commemorates the adoption of the first constitution in Europe and the second in the world.

Shops

Due to the spring season and the 2 bank holidays, some offices and institutions may be closed during the week. While you will be able to stock up on supplies on 27th April, all shops will be closed on the 5th, as well as on 1st and 3rd May.

A walk around the Shipyard

The Polish Maritime Historical Foundation would like to invite you to the 2019 May Day Tour, centred around the 175th anniversary of the modern shipyard industry in what eventually became the Gdansk Shipyard.

It is a series of tours around the Gdansk shipyard areas, starting on 28th April (Sunday) and ending on 5th May (Sunday). The tours are led by a professional guide and former shipyard employee, and start at 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM at the historic Gate No. 2 of the Gdansk Shipyard, near the “Souvenire” stand – Plac Solidarnosci, 1 Doki St. in Gdansk.

The wide range of topics covered during every tour includes the most important dates, events, characters and places related to the history of the Gdansk Shipyard, from the mid-19th century to the present.

Every tour takes about 75 minutes. Register for free by sending an email to mfh.gdansk@gmail.com

If the weather’s nice

The weather between April and May can still be unreliable. We are of course keeping our fingers crossed, but if it does rain, the events listed above will not leave you bored. If the sun is shining, be sure to go for a walk around the park or along the coast, which are particularly beautiful this time of year.
