For the first time the theatre opened its door on 3 August 1801. The location of the theatre is no accident since it is in Targ Węglowy [Coal Market] that as early as in the 16th century there were buildings used for theatre and the inhabitants used to meet at the place to give in to culture and entertainment. With years the theatre has been changing its image – from a ”wooden shack” to a modernistic building with glazing that has been called the “aquarium” by the local people. Carl Steinberg can be deemed to have been the first director of the theatre. For many years of its operations, the Theatre has hosted such starts as for instance: Sophie Schröder – core artist of Burgtheater, Vienna, Carl La Roche from Hoftheater, Weimar, Friedrich Genée, Charlotte Birch-Pfeiffer, Madame Cretingerst or Lola Montez – a great dancer from Berlin. Among Polish artists, performance was made by the following among others: Kalina Jędrusik, Zbigniew Cybulski, Jerzy Goliński, Leszek Herdegen or Bogumił Kobiela. Now the Theatre has five stages: Large Stage, Black Stage, Paintshop Stage, Chamber Stage in Sopot and Summer Stage in Pruszcz Gdański. Adam Orzechowski has been the director since 2006. Now Teatr Wybrzeże is one of the best known and appreciated theatres in Poland. Annually it has over 100 thousand spectators. The spectacles staged in Gdańsk are performed in major festivals in Poland and the artistic team has won a number of most important theatrical prizes. So it is worth seeing the exceptional performances which will no doubt offer you lots of unforgettable emotions.
