Most of us know what the merchant association called Hanseatic League was and that one of its most important cities was Gdańsk. But why was the Hanseatic League founded, what city was its capital and why, after many years of prosperity, did the idea of a trade association of so many cities fail? Answers to these and other questions can be found in this section of our website. We invite you to read it, especially since in June 2024 the International Congress of the Cities of the New Hanseatic League will be held in Gdańsk.
The Hanseatic League experienced its greatest flourishing in the first half of the 15th century. Its activities covered approximately 200 cities located in the German, Flanders, English, Scandinavian and Polish cities. Some of them were located at considerable distances from the sea (e.g. Torun, Wroclaw and Kraków).
The Hanseatic League's joint economic activities brought many elements of everyday life closer together. Cities have become similar to each other to some extent. The layout of the urban layout was similar, with a characteristic sequence of streets, a center with a market square, characteristic buildings, town halls, churches, gates, and market squares. And a brick.
Goods were naturally transported by ship. In the initial period of the Hansa's existence, Koga played a dominant role in water transport.
Medium merchants operating on a smaller financial and area scale did not hold high public positions. This sometimes caused various social tensions, and rarely anyone achieved these highest honours through economic success.
You could meet locals and visitors on the streets. The latter sometimes came from very distant parts of Europe. Residents moved to deal with basic life and professional matters, and newcomers tried to find their way in this city.
