    Hanseatic Gdansk

    Most of us know what the merchant association called Hanseatic League was and that one of its most important cities was Gdańsk. But why was the Hanseatic League founded, what city was its capital and why, after many years of prosperity, did the idea of a trade association of so many cities fail? Answers to these and other questions can be found in this section of our website.     The story of Hanseatic Gdansk

    The Hanseatic League experienced its greatest flourishing in the first half of the 15th century. Its activities covered approximately 200 cities located in the German, Flanders, English, Scandinavian and Polish cities. Some of them were located at considerable distances from the sea (e.g. Torun, Wroclaw and Kraków).
